Lingerie industry clusters in China

Intimate apparel making in China is concentrated in a few districts rather than spread thin: Shantou for bras, Puning for scale, Foshan for design work and Yiwu for seamless and thermal knit. Knowing which cluster carries which strength is the first filter in shortlisting a plant.

Why the cluster map matters before the first sample

Intimate apparel is a chain product: a single bra draws on molders for cups, weavers for elastics, dyers for lace, makers of sliders and rings, and a cut-and-sew line that assembles all of it. No plant carries every step in-house at competitive depth. What a buyer is really choosing, then, is not one factory but a district - a place where the missing steps sit within an hour's drive and where the labor pool has done this exact work for a generation. China's women's intimate apparel production is concentrated in a handful of such districts, and each has a different center of gravity.

This page sets out the four clusters this desk works in, the figures publicly reported for each, and how the shortlist is drawn from them. The figures below are attributed to local government releases and B2B sourcing rankings; they describe the districts, not any plant in them, and no company is named.

Shantou: Chendian and Gurao, the underwear capital

The towns of Chendian and Gurao in the Shantou area are referred to across the trade as the underwear capital, and the label is earned by density rather than slogan. Industry counts put intimate apparel plants there at more than 2,000, and local reporting credits the bra and underwear industry with over 60 percent of Chendian's GDP. The practical meaning for a buyer is component depth: cup molding, underwire, sliders, rings, elastics and lace all sit close together, so a spec change that would take weeks elsewhere moves in days. This is where most bra programs are shortlisted, from balconette to sports constructions, and where seamless bodywear lines sit as well.

Puning: scale with a full chain

Puning, also in Guangdong, is the volume center for women's intimates and homewear; local government figures put its textile and garment output above 140 billion yuan in 2025, carried by more than 7,000 firms, with a chain that runs from raw material through to testing and certification inside the same district. For buyers the draw is depth of capacity in cut-and-sew basics - panty programs, homewear sets, multi-color runs - and the presence of in-district testing, which shortens the loop between a batch and its certificate paperwork.

Foshan and Yiwu: design depth and seamless capacity

Two further points on the map round out the shortlist. Yanbu in Foshan's Nanhai district has built its name on design and development and higher-end OEM work; programs that start from a brand's own sketches and grading often route through there. The Yiwu belt in Zhejiang concentrates seamless knitting and thermal underwear, and feeds a large share of the multi-category volume behind marketplace and wholesale channels. Between the four districts, most program shapes a buyer can name already have a natural home.

How the desk works the map

The desk does not route everything to one district. A range that mixes a bra line and a panty line may span Shantou and Puning, with seamless pieces added from the Yiwu belt, all under one color card and one inspection standard - that is the range argument set out in what an intimate apparel program is made of. Shortlisting starts from the line and fabric family, moves to capability checks on the plants that fit, and ends with the audit routine on the factory audit page. The trade press and B2B rankings give the map; the visits give the truth.

Reading the numbers with care

Cluster figures are the districts' story, not a promise about any single supplier. A plant inside a famous district can still be the wrong plant for a spec, and a smaller town can hold exactly the molder a program needs. The figures here are restated with their sources, kept to what local government releases and industry rankings actually say, and never converted into capacity claims for a named line. Bring a program shape through the quote form and the desk returns the district logic behind the shortlist, or read the cluster report for the longer version.

Questions buyers ask

Which cluster is best for a first bra program?

Shantou's Chendian and Gurao belt is the usual first stop for bras, because cup molding, underwire, sliders and elastics sit within the same district and spec changes move fast. Puning adds cut-and-sew depth, and the desk often splits a range across the two rather than forcing one plant to carry everything.

Are the cluster figures on this page verified?

They are attributed, not verified by this desk: plant counts and the 60 percent GDP share come from industry counts and local reporting, and the Puning output and firm counts come from local government releases. The desk cites them as published and checks plant-level capability separately, per project.

Can I visit the plants in these clusters?

Yes. Shortlist visits are arranged per project, usually combining two or three plants across one or two districts in a single trip. The desk sets the agenda - capability, certificates, working conditions - and sits in on the walk-through so findings land in one written record.

Do all four clusters handle the same product lines?

No. Shantou is bra-weighted, Puning carries intimates and homewear at volume, Foshan (Yanbu) leads in design-led OEM, and the Yiwu belt concentrates seamless and thermal knitting. Matching the line to the district first is what keeps sampling rounds down.

What MOQ do plants in these clusters ask for?

Reference ranges run 1,000-3,000 pieces per color for a private label bra, 500-1,000 on catalog bases and 2,000-5,000 for panties, confirmed in writing per program. See the MOQ and lead time page for the full set of ranges by line.

Send the lines you need, target sizes, the quantity per color and your market. The desk replies in writing with matched plants, a spec sheet, certification routes and the reference MOQ.
