What a thong is
A thong is defined by what it removes: the rear panel narrows to a strap - the T-back - so the seat is left uncovered and no fabric line shows under close-fitting garments. The waistband sits at mid to low rise, the front keeps a conventional triangle or bikini-shaped panel, and sizes typically run XS to 2XL, a step narrower than the brief ladder because the rear strap concentrates load on a smaller band of the body.
For a sourcing program the thong is the most placement-sensitive panty in the range. With so little fabric, there is nowhere to hide a seam, an over-tight edge or a gusset stitched half off-grain. Returns are driven almost entirely by comfort at the seams, so the plant conversation is about tolerances: where the rear strap joins the front panel, how the edges are finished, and how much tension the waistband and strap carry relative to each other.
The six layers on the card
| Layer | What decides quality | Typical options |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Body fabric | Stretch recovery, opacity, hand feel at the front panel | Seamless microfiber knit, cotton-blend jersey, stretch lace |
| 2 Gusset lining | Fiber purity, stitch plan, breathability | OEKO-TEX cotton, single layer |
| 3 Rear strap | Geometry, tension, join placement at the front panel | T-back or V-back, center or split strap |
| 4 Edges and trims | Edge flatness, chafe resistance, wash integrity | Bonded, laser-cut or lace edges, covered elastic waistband |
| 5 Fixings and labels | Label comfort, brand tab placement | Heat-transfer labels, tagless print, woven tabs |
| 6 Packaging | Presentation and channel readiness | Individual poly bag, tissue wrap, printed box |
Size runs and edge options on this page are typical ranges seen across the category, not a datasheet. Each program carries its own spec sheet, and the figures a brand prints are confirmed from that sheet. Construction vocabulary is set out in thong construction.
Seams, edges and the comfort equation
Three edge families cover the range, and the choice drives both price tier and comfort profile:
- Seamless knit. The garment is knitted in a tube on circular machines, so the side seams disappear entirely; the smooth-line position, strongest at volume.
- Bonded or laser-cut edges. Adhesive-bonded joins replace stitching at the strap and leg line; low profile, dependent on bond discipline through the wash cycle.
- Lace edges. Stretch lace at the waist and strap; the fashion position, with the lace lot's recovery named on the sheet.
Whichever family is chosen, the join between the rear strap and the front panel is the point sampled hardest: it carries the most movement in wear. Plants sample the join across the size run before the batch is confirmed, and the desk holds both faces of every sample - inside and out - against the approved standard.
Gusset construction and hygiene
The cotton gusset is not negotiable in the desk's programs: a single OEKO-TEX cotton layer, fully stitched down so it cannot fold or shift in wear. On seamless knits the gusset is the one sewn component, which makes its stitch plan the quality tell of the whole garment. Construction detail sits in gusset construction, and fabric trade-offs in cotton vs modal panties.
Certification and labeling
The baseline holds across the category: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 per lot, covering yarn to finished product, gusset and elastics included. US programs add fiber content labeling under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, care labeling under the FTC Care Labeling Rule and 16 CFR 1610 flammability; EU-bound batches add REACH SVHC screening. Because tags are the first thing a thong wearer notices, tagless heat-transfer labeling is the common program choice, planned inside the certifications route.
Where thongs are made
Cut-and-sew thongs come mainly from the Puning belt in Guangdong, where the cut-and-sew panty chain is deepest, while seamless-knit thongs draw on Yiwu's circular-knitting capacity and Shantou's lace handling for the fashion tiers. The desk shortlists plants by seamless capability where the program needs it, bond or stitch discipline at the strap join, and the certificate file they can produce per lot. More on the clusters.
Inspection before shipment
- Rear strap geometry, width and join placement on sampled units against the program sheet.
- Waistband and strap tension across the size run, from XS to 2XL.
- Edge flatness and bond or stitch integrity after stretch and wash cycles.
- Gusset attachment, fiber content and stitch plan on both faces.
- Color against the retained swatch under a standard lamp.
- Carton drop test, fiber and care labels, and pack contents against the approved sheet.
The inspection plan is written per program and confirmed before the first batch; see quality control. Reference quantities and timing sit on the MOQ and lead time page, and the quote form lists what the plants will ask for.
